A Landscaping Class Will Teach You All About Landscaping

If you have always been interested in the topic of landscaping you should learn about it from the experts. While you can read various gardening magazines, the best way for you to learn about landscaping is to take a landscaping class.

You might be surprised to know that landscaping classes are an excellent option. These classes are usually something that people who are interested in botany like to take, as it is a way to implement their love of plants.

You’ll learn about:
* Plant health, soil, and fertilizers
* Servicing garden tractors and other tools used in landscaping
* Creating landscaping designs using shrubs and ground covers
* Specialty landscaping, starting and operating your own landscaping business
* And you may be able to learn it right at home

With the right credentials, you can:
* Work for an established landscaping firm or start your own business.
* Complete your training in as little as six months from today, or take longer if you wish.

If you have a basic knowledge of flowers and plants, that basic knowledge will help you when it comes to learning about the basics of landscaping. If, however, you really do not know much about either, that is not a problem, because a landscaping class will teach you all of the basic knowledge plus more.

There are usually several levels of landscaping classes that you can choose from, in accordance with your current knowledge. The basic landscaping classes will most likely have to do with being able to identify certain kinds of plants, and how they can be implemented into various landscaping designs.

One important thing that you should know about landscaping is that you will need to pay attention to the kinds of plants that work well in your climate. For example, if you like a certain kind of plant, but that plant is only right in warmer climates, and you live in a colder climate, you will need to find a plant that can work with your climate.

Another important thing to learn about landscaping is the quality of soil that you have, because it varies with the climate. The kind of soil that you have should have sufficient nutrients, so you might need to get soil that has all the nutrients that your plants need. If you decide to take a class about landscaping, that should be one of the topics.

One thing that people often want to know about landscaping classes is whether they are expensive to take. The price of landscaping classes will have to do with how advanced the class is, as well as how long the class will last. It will also have to do with the materials that you might need to purchase for the class.

If you really want to learn about landscaping, check out the programs that are available at your local community college, as community college’s often offer landscaping classes. You can also ask local landscaping companies where they would suggest. With the proper research, you are sure to find the right landscaping class.

Professional Landscaper training should include:

* All the books, lessons, and learning aids you need
* “Landscape Tools Use and Safety” videos
* Tree and shrub identification books
* 3D Home Design Suite Deluxe Software
* Instructional support and
* Some Access to InformationalWebsites

Bathroom Remodeling and Decor Ideas

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Bathroom remodeling and decor ideas are all around us if we just know where to look, and keep an open mind.

Bathroom remodeling, or updating our ideas in bathroom decor is a great way to add value to your home since it is the second most popular remodeling project for homes. Not only does it add money value to your home should you decide to sell in the future, but it is also a factor in how fast your home will sell since it is the second most looked at factor by most home buyers.

But unless you are currently considering selling your home, the most important thing to think about is how much it will add to your enjoyment in your home. Being a room in your home that is much used, updating decor and adding amenities by remodeling can add much pleasure to your daily life.

Appraise your current bathroom carefully:

Sometimes it is just hard to know where to start gathering ideas for either remodeling or updating the decor of your bathroom.

First decide whether you really need to remodel, or whether you just need to refresh the decor in your bath. Take a good long look at your bathroom. Sometimes it is easy to just want to throw the whole thing out and start fresh. But wait. If remodeling is what you have in mind, then give it a good look, and determine if there are fixtures or elements that could stay and reduce your remodeling budget.

For example: If your bathtub is in good condition, and you are planning to keep a tub in your bathroom, maybe just replacing those grubby looking shower doors with new ones would give it a whole new look and for less money and hassle than removing and replacing the tub.

What about the cabinets? If they are basically in good shape, but a little dated and doggy, then consider sanding them down, applying stain in a non-wood color, and new hardware. Usually a new vanity top is needed after a number of years, because they get so much use, but if you can salvage the supporting cabinet, you’ve just saved some money.

Where to get ideas for bathroom remodeling and decor:

Start a folder where you can begin and continue to gather ideas for either remodeling of redecorating your bathroom.

Get out of your own head for a while and see what is available. We all get in ruts, and sometimes this can filter into our decor ideas. You are looking for something new, so find other sources for ideas besides the inside of your own head.

Many home improvement centers have model bathrooms and kitchens set up, and can provide a source for some new ideas.

Look at the bathrooms of friends or those in decorated model homes for ideas (just don’t get caught up and buy a whole new house).

Go online and surf around and see what is offered in the way of decorating and remodeling your bathroom.

Decorating books can be good if they are current. Even better are periodicals because they are published frequently and reflect what is current in decorating themes. When checking periodicals don’t limit yourself to just those featuring bathrooms, many ideas can be gained from living spaces.

When looking through periodicals consider decor elements in other living spaces besides the bathroom. This can be a mine field of ideas for color pallets, storage ideas, and accessories that can be incorporated into a luxury bath.

Tear out articles and pictures whether they have only one element that inspires an idea or several new ideas. Continue to gather ideas until you have a firm plan of action.

Installation Of Paving Stones

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Because the installation of concrete paving stones is a complex and time consuming procedure many do it yourselfers do not invest in the effort to do the job right – the first time. If proper installation is not followed, the pavers will heave in some spots, settle in others and spread out producing an unsightly outcome.

The following information is intended as an overview to the proper installation of concrete paving bricks. These are the steps that would be taken by a reputable contractor who would be providing a guarantee on the work done.

The first and a very important step is to have the property surveyed for buried cables, power lines and gas pipes before you start digging. Most utility companies provide location services free of charge. All it takes is a phone call. If you excavate without having the location services flag your property, you will be held responsible for any damages and subsequent repairs. Not to mention the fact that cutting into a buried electrical service with a shovel could put you out of commission for a very long time. As well, think of the anguish you might create in the community by cutting off utility services to your neighbors. The primary service companies that should be called are gas, electric, cable TV, and telephone.

Using stakes and string map out the area to be excavated. The more intricate the area, the more complex the installation and cutting of the paving stones. Remember that paving stones are not flexible and hence tight curves and arches can be difficult to fill.

Remove the existing pavement, sod, plants, and trees from the area to be excavated.

Excavate the soil to the required depth. The depth needed is the basic calculation derived from taking the finished surface minus the thickness of the paver, the depth of the setting bed and the depth of the base material. The required thickness of the base material (commonly 4 to 8-inches for patios and walkways and 6 to 12-inches for driveways and roadways) is totally dependent on local soil conditions, primarily the soils reaction to water. The city or county soil engineer will be able to tell you the required thickness of the base material for your area.

Prior to laying the base material, the sub-grade must be compacted. With a clay sub-grade you will need to use a powered roller or rammer. With a sandy soil the use of a mechanical vibrator, should be adequate to provide proper compaction.

After the sub-grade is compacted, place a layer of landscape (geotextile) fabric on the sub-grade. It is important that the base material be somewhat isolated from the natural soil, especially in high moisture areas.

Use a granular base material that compacts easily on top of the landscaping fabric. The material should be laid in 2 to 4-inch layers, or lifts as it they are called within the industry, with each layer being individually compacted. It is impossible to get proper compaction in a layer that is thicker than 4-inches no matter what type of compacting equipment is employed. The base material goes under numerous names (“type 2 base”, “AB3”, “21A” or “3/4 minus”) depending on where you are located. Your local concrete paver supplier will know the material to be used as a base for installing the pavers.

Once the granular base material has been compacted, install edge restraints along the border, on top of the base material using steel spikes to secure them in place. The edge restraints are a key part of the potential longevity of the paver installation as they provide lateral load resistance and provide continuity to the interlocking characteristics of the paving stones. Without the edge restraints, the paving stones will separate and spread over time.

Lay the setting bed, to a depth of 1 to 1.5-inches, on top of the compacted base material and spread it evenly across the entire project area. The setting bed is usually a material of washed coarse concrete sand or granite stone dust.

You are now ready to install the pavers in your chosen pattern. As a general statement, it is best to start at one end of the project and in the middle of the area (there are some exceptions with complex patterns. Do not place edge pavers first as you cannot be sure of their precise location. If it is a large project and you have several skids, take pavers randomly from all skids to ensure that any color variations between the individual skids are blended within the total project.

The paving stones are down, but you are not quite finished! Sweep sand over the top of the pavers and fill the gaps between the pavers. Use a vibrating compactor, over the entire project, to force the sand to completely fill the gaps between pavers (sweep additional sand as necessary). The process of vibrating sand into the gaps creates an amazingly solid and stable surface.

Last but not least, remove any excess sand that has accumulated from the previous step and apply a protective sealing finish to your project. A sealer will highlight the paver colors and protect the stones from staining. The sealer should be applied at regular intervals, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tip 1: If it rains during the compacting phases of the sub-grade or the base material, make sure that the ground has dried out completely before you continue.

Tip 2: Remember drainage when grading the soil. You should allow for a slope of 0.25-inch per foot to allow water to run off the finished project.

Tip 3: Don’t be afraid to use a level during all phases.

As with all home improvement and landscaping projects, planning and knowledge are the keys to success.

What You Need To Know About Bath Tub Refinishing

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

After many years of living in your home there may be some things which are in need of repair or replacement. For instance, there may be stains that build up on your bathtub, giving it the appearance of being dirty and unhealthy. These stains are very hard to remove and in fact some may seem impossible to remove, no matter how much effort you put into cleaning the bathtub. You may even consider replacing the tub to be rid of any unsightly stains. However, before buying an expensive new tub, you may be interested to know that there is a way to give your old stained bathtub a brand new face lift. The method that is used for making stained tubs look brand new is by means of bathtub refinishing.

First of all, bathing is supposed to be a pleasurable experience. It is supposed to relax you and give you a chance to have a good rest and cleanse yourself. However, what if you are bathing in bath tub that looks dirty and unhygienic where no matter how much you clean it, you can’t seem to remove the stains. It would really gross you out just to see your dirty bath tub and may even think twice before you take a dip in it.

If you are thinking about replacing your old bath tub with a new one, you have to consider that it will be very expensive to do so. If you can’t afford a brand new bath tub, you should consider refinishing your old bath tub. This is a cost effective solution that can let you save a lot of money in purchasing a bath tub. What bath tub refinishing means is that you will not really replace your old bath tub with a new one, but you will refinish your old bath tub in order to make it look as good as new. Besides, it may seem illogical to throw away a perfectly working bath tub because it’s dirty.

Here are the basics of refinishing a bath tub in order to give you an idea on how it works and what it can do to your bath tub.

First of all, it is very important that you should protect yourself when you are refinishing your bath tub. In refinishing your bath tub, you will deal with several chemicals that may be very harmful to you. It is important that you should work in a well-ventilated area as the fumes of these chemicals are harmful when inhaled.

The first thing you have to do is by cleaning and removing any loose caulking or gaskets. There are chemicals that you can use to remove soap stains, and hard water mineral deposits. After cleaning your bath tub thoroughly, the next step is by applying the primer to prepare it for refinishing. Cover the areas where you don’t want to refinish with a masking tape and paper.

Once the primer has dried, you will apply the base coat. The first layer of base coat must be coated evenly and thoroughly all the way over the entire surface of the bathtub. Let this base coat dry thoroughly. Once the base coat is dry, you will be able to safely apply the topcoat. This topcoat is the finish for your bathtub and it will display what your tub will look like when you are finished. The choice of color for the bathtub is yours, just make sure to evenly apply the topcoat to make certain that the tub is given a great finish.

The basics of refinishing a bathtub are quite simple. Check your local hardware store for the available bathtub refinishing kits. There will also be detailed instructions included on refinishing your bathtub.

Cleaning Tips For Your Precious Window

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

House cleaning is a daily routine that many housewives are used to and this includes window cleaning. As easy as it may sound, cleaning your windows requires good cleaning skills so that you can get better results every time you clean them.

So why is window cleaning needed? The answers are quite simple; one is to get a better view, another is for heat efficiency, and if you want, you can even become a professional window cleaner and earn income.

To clean your window screens, you can use hand-held vacuum. This gadget can easily remove all the dirt contained on the window tracks and frames.

When cleaning your glass window, wash panes from left and then to the right (outside portion) and for the inside, wash it from top to the bottom.

Make sure that you clean the top most window and work your way down to avoid drips or streaks.

You can use your old newspapers by scrunching them up although it can turn your hands into a dirty black color. Other people use cotton rags, cloth diaper, coffee filter, or percale pillowcase to clean their glass windows. What’s good about these items is that you can also use them to clean your mirrors.

Your window screens also should be kept clean. Simply lay the window screen over a fence or wall and rinse it using a hose. The dirt can be removed easily. Mix water and dish detergent and use this solution to scrub the remaining dirt off the window screen. Use a brush for this task.

Don’t rush your window cleaning task. Take your time and don’t just clean the glass; the entire window should be cleaned. If you notice that your window locks are stuck, remove them first and prepare warm water where you can soak the locks. Clean the locks thoroughly.

Some homes have tall windows making it hard to clean. You can also make use of certain handy devices which are designed to clean the portions of the window which you can’t reach. Cleaning solutions can also help in making the task easier and faster.

Your window needs gentle care so make sure that you clean them regularly.

Having Fun Doing Your Own Wall Textures, Ceiling Textures

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »
Posted on

In some parts of the United States, the most popular wall textures are NO TEXTURE. Smooth. Same goes for ceilings. This means a perfectly flat and blemish free surface.

But out here in the wild and woolly Pacific Coast where I live, plaster and drywall textures are popular. Some will say that is because textures tend to hide a bad plaster or drywall job.

In some cases, could be. But it could also be that people LIKE the look of a textured surface. Some wall and ceiling textures are gorgeous.

In my work with old plaster and drywall, I find the demand for wall and ceiling textures to be high, and so I have my bundle of texture sample boards to show clients.

Most of my jobs involve either matching an existing texture or applying one of my own unique patterns.

And sometimes my customers like to watch as I put on the texture they have chosen. I may hear comments like: “Hey, that looks like fun!” and “How hard is it to do that?”

And my answer to both kinds of questions is, “Yes, it’s fun and I bet you could learn to do this, too.”

Sometimes I may recognize that I am not being 100% honest when I say this. After 35 years, it’s not ALWAYS fun, and yes, some textures take some practice to do well — but behind my response there lies a strong kernel of truth: this is essentially a fun project that a motivated do-it-yourselfer can master with practice and patience.

And that may mean you!

But before you jump in with both feet, allow me to give you a few hints to get you started right. These are things I have learned over the years, some by trial and error.

Because … I don’t always get it right the first time. And you probably won’t either. Hence the need, once you get going, to EXPERIMENT and PRACTICE.

The easiest texture materials to use are those designed for drywall. They work for plaster as well. They will stick to both painted and unpainted plaster and drywall.

Standard all-purpose drywall compounds can be thinned and used as texture. Or you can buy boxes of pre-mixed texture compound. Texture compound also comes as bags of powder. (At least true for the U.S.)

Pre-mixed texture mud may need to be thinned. Same goes for pre-mixed all purpose muds. If you mix your texture compound from powder, keep track of your powder-water ratio so you can duplicate it anytime in the future.

The only way you will know if your mud is the right thickness is by experimenting with your tools and textures until you get the effect you like.

Some effects need thicker mud, some thinner. If you are mixing from powder, remember that it is easier to thin your inital mix than to thicken it. In any case, when mixing from scratch, let soak overnight to soften lumps and get it smoother.

Texturizing tools can run the gamut from taping knives to trowels, to various kinds of brushes, to texture rollers and even to commercial texturing tools.

I have even used my hands, ala fingerpainting in grade school. What fun!

Several words to emphasize: EXPERIMENT, CONSISTENCY, PATIENCE.

By experimenting, you discover the thickness of mud that is easiest to work with. You find what tools you like best. Consistency of application is your goal.

(For example, there are some absolutely stunning texture effects I can do, but I have a very hard time getting them to be consistent over the whole wall or ceiling, expecially if these are large.)

And patience will insure that you don’t give up easily. Give yourself time to learn.

You will need to practice your technique before you tackle that wall or ceiling. Scraps of drywall or heavy cardboard or even painted plywood will work as a substitute surface.

One thing to remember – once you go for real, you are committed. That is, once you start, you will have to go corner to corner, the whole thing. With many textures, there is no leaving off in the middle.

This is why you probably need to start small. Try a small ceiling, or a small room of walls. When you can do that to your satisfaction, then you may be ready for something bigger.

When you are all done, and ready for paint, be sure to apply a good coat of drywall primer (PVA) first. This will lock up the porosity of your textured surface and provide the foundation for a much better paint coat later.

Now go have some fun!

Bathroom Remodeling Idea Makes Bathroom Repairs Easier

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Bathroom repair is easier with access panels

Soon after I had remodeled my small bathroom it developed a water leak. The first thing I knew about it was a puddle on the floor of the room below. A water pipe was leaking and it was buried in one of the bathroom walls which not only made it difficult to find out where the leak was but a lot of ceramic tiles had to be destroyed to get at it.

When I asked my bathroom contractors why they didn’t make it easier to get at the new pipe work they said that it would have made my quotation too expensive so they just buried the pipes and hoped that they don’t give any trouble. It was just my luck then that my bathroom was the one where they made lousy joints. The bathroom repair turned out to be far more costly than it would have been to make all the pipes accessible in the first place and I wish now that I’d had the foresight to put that in the specifications.

Where to put access panels

The obvious solution to the bathroom repair problem is to provide access panels for all of the pipe work joints and as much of the pipe length as possible. When you specify what you want in your bathroom remodel make sure that you will be able to get at every joint easily.

Where the water pipes are installed in a separating wall it’s often convenient to provide access on the other side of the wall rather than inside the bathroom where the ceramic tiles are. You may even be able to turn the access into a small cupboard, which would give you an added benefit. Opening the cupboard doors would provide simple access to the water pipes.

Pipe work under bathtub and under floor can be made accessible by removable panels. Make sure that the floor covering allows for this and a suitable sealer is used to fill any gaps when the access is closed.

If the access panel has to go on the bathroom side of the wall then special attention to waterproofing will be required.

How to make access panels in ceramic tiles

To accommodate a radiator in my bathroom remodel the contractors built a false wall to hide the pipe work. This wall was then set with ceramic tiles and the radiator mounted in front of the tiles. This pipe work has not leaked but I do wonder what I would do if it ever did.

Tiling a small part of the false wall separately on a removable section could have provided an access panel. This would then be screwed firmly to the main part of the wall and the edges sealed with a silicon-sealing compound. The screws would pass through the tiles so silicon sealer would be used to seal the screw heads and holes in the tiles. When the need arose the sealer could be stripped away and the panel unscrewed. Resealing when the problem was fixed would be just as easy.

Bean Bags Versus Traditional Sofas

Why bean bags chairs are better than traditional furniture
When you are looking for new furniture for your home and not ready to commit yourself to an entire lounge suit, or maybe you are trying to find something to brighten up a living room or child’s room, don’t always dismiss what may be right in front of you. For whatever reason you are buying furniture, you should consider the prospect of bean bag chairs over contemporary furniture. A bean bag chair, if you haven’t heard of them before, are a large cushion like shape filled with polystyrene beads or beans.

The history of the “beans”
They were first invented by workers who use to throw polystyrene off cuts into bags at the end of a work line. A Company that expanded on this idea later developed this in 1969. They brought a pear shaped leather bag called a Socco, this idea didn’t work so after alterations on the name and design it became a smash all over the world. Now, bean bag chairs are finally back in fashion as the latest craze in home decor. Brought back from the 1970s’ as a comfy option for indoor seating and have come back in style just in time to give you peace of mind when buying furniture. With such a variety of options to suit your home, you can now choose your favorite colors, sizes, fabrics and styles. Best of all, they are made with strong, UV protected, water resistant fabric, so you can take them outside with you whether to the boat or by the swimming pool.

Bean Bags vs. Traditional furniture
With most traditional furniture you couldn’t dream of sliding them outside to lounge by the pool (if you are strong enough to), as some lounge suites can run up to thousands of dollars and you wouldn’t dare think of ruining the beautiful lounge leather. A convenient and easy way to take a comfortable and lightweight chair is to make a bean bag chair your new best friend. They will help you relax and are especially great for easing back or neck pain. Think of it as your own personal masseuse.

Health benefits of the bean bag
They are a healthy investment and comparatively cheaper than a lounge suite too, as they are ideal for pregnant women as they provide a comfortable and supportive seating. They are also great for students, parents, children, pregnant women and sufferers of back conditions. Students can use beanbags as a lightweight seating in a dorm room and are so inexpensive that it doesn’t matter if they spilt a mess on them, as they are relatively easy to clean. Choose any sport and you will find a beanbag that is shaped in your favorite ball or animal. Great for kids as they provide a soft place for your children to site while watching TV, reading or playing a video game.

Things you need to know about bean bags
As great as they are, there is also a safety issue to be address when using bean bags in your home. If you do decide to by yourself or someone else a bean bag chair make sure you remove the pull tag once the bag is filled with polystyrene beans. This is done to prevent a choking hazard for children. A liner that slides between the bag cover and the beans can also be purchased as an extra child hazard prevention. Once you have you bean bag and have filled it with beans, it is finally the best part: the experience itself. The best way to approach a bean bag is to back yourself into one, sit down, let the bag support your body and shape to you then sit back, relax and enjoy!

Generators – Buying Tips for Finding the Best Value

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »
Posted on

Are you interested in purchasing a generator? Generators can be used in the home or in the workplace. If your answer to this question is “yes”, then you may want to read through our checklist to find out the steps you should take before you make a final decision.

Who uses generators?

A generator can be a useful device for all types of people. For example, home generators can be a huge benefit to people who live in areas where there are recurring power failures. In an office environment, generators can save computers from crashing. In retail stores, generators can prevent cash registers from shutting off. In manufacturing plants, generators can keep production going so that a plant does not have to shut down when the power does. Think about it: Just about every person every place in the world depends upon electricity to complete tasks each and every day.

How much wattage do you require?

In order to determine what kind of generator you need to buy, you must first collect a listing of all of the appliances, machines, or lights that you want to run off of the generator. To find out how many watts of electricity you need in your generator, you will have to add up the wattage of all of these things. To determine wattage, you simply need to multiply amps by volts to get the wattage on any appliance. Keep in mind that no matter what generator you decide to purchase, it will always have a maximum output and a rated output. The maximum output will start an appliance, machine, or light. However, sustaining that wattage depends upon the generator’s rated output. Take, for example, a refrigerator. A refrigerator will need 2200 watts to start, and 700 watts to operate. A light bulb will depend upon its individual wattage.

Where can you look for a generator?

You can shop for generators in your local hardware store, or in a large supply store such as Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can also find a huge variety of generators on the Internet. The following web sites are just a few places where you can compare prices, research generators, and read consumer reviews of generators: www.maxtool.com, www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com, www.northernsafety.com, and www.generatorjoe.net. After you purchase a generator, it is a good idea to speak with a licensed electrician to learn all the important information you might need to know about setting it up and using it.
