The Impact Of Beds On Bedroom Design

Filed under: bedroom, home decoration, home improvement | No Comments »

In years past, beds were not considered to be an element that factored into bedroom design, more just a place to lay your head, although the bed could be dressed to match whatever style had been chosen for the bedroom.

Times have changed and with the return of bedsteads or frame beds, the bed is now an element that factors in quite highly in bedroom design. The range of styles, colours, fabrics and materials that today’s modern beds are manufactured from go to enhance and work in synergy with all bedroom design plans.

The decision of the type of bed to purchase in relation to design can be broken down into three steps:

The aesthetic of the room.

Deciding on the aesthetic of a room or the way that it looks is not as difficult as it may seem at first. In most cases you will already have a good source of inspiration from the other rooms in the house, but let’s say for arguments case that it is a blank canvas. In that case the world is your oyster as there are so many places to draw ideas from;

-The internet

-Interior design book/magazines

-Ideal home exhibition type shows

-New property development show houses (always a favorite of mine)

-Furniture retail showrooms (you don’t always have to shop)

-Friends and relative’s houses

Once you have got your inspiration for how the room is going to look you need next to plan how the bed is going fit in the room.

Where to position the bed.

This can be something that gets overlooked at this stage and can result in being quite costly if other purchases are made such as furniture without this in mind. It is therefore important that before purchasing of any bedroom furniture takes place, consideration is given to the following.

Size of bed – will there be sufficient space around the bed to meet your requirements i.e. opening wardrobe doors, doors, getting changed round the bed etc etc.

Position of bed – have you planned on buying bunk beds that the steps will only go on one side and thus will only go on one wall or a captain’s bed with the same problem.

Height of the bed – you may have taken into consideration the length and width of the bed, but what about height? This is not a problem for about 98% of beds, but is a big consideration when buying a four poster bed. Have you measured the height of the room and will that four poster fit in term of height?

We have so far worked out the style and limitations of the room in which you are going to house your bed, but there is one last consideration to take into account before you part with any of your hard earned cash. That final consideration is what you use your bedroom for or “How do you live in your bedroom”

How do you live in your bedroom?

As mentioned in the introduction bedrooms have become a multifunctional space, and these days are used as offices, somewhere to watch TV, listen to music or a quiet place to read or get away from the grind. All of these are key components that need to be considered when deciding on the type of bed that you will buy.

It is now time to go and purchase that dream bed. Now that you have followed the steps above you should be confident that the purchasing decision will be a calculated one, and one made from consideration as opposed to impulse. By using the rest of this guide as a would be “bed purchasing bible”, you will feel at ease when confronted with “jargon” and “terminology”, and most of all you will be in the driving seat when it comes deciding on the type of bed for you!

In summary; a bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom and time and consideration should be spent on the whole process of planning and choosing the bed that will be suited to your requirements. As mentioned in the introduction “a decision to buy a bed should have the same amount of time and effort spent on it as purchasing a car”, if this is followed, and in conjunction with the advice from this guide, you will find yourself making a purchasing decision that will not just enhance the style and functionality of a bedroom, but will also result in a comfortable nights sleep.

One of a Parent’s Worst Nightmares

In today’s economy, it has become almost essential for families to be at least two-income household. The ideal of a parent working outside the home and one staying home to take care of the kids and the house doesn’t seem practical anymore. The answer many parents have found is in-home childcare, but that choice can be problematic. In the past, the big concern has been babysitters spending all their time on the phone or eating food out of the refrigerator. The modern reality can be much worse.

Jonny Brand seemed like a nice neighborhood teen. Conscientious boy, polite, loved kids. A real winner. So why not pay him to take care of their two young kids, Dean and Bonnie Williams thought. It’s just for a few hours after their preschool lets out and Bonnie gets home. Penny and Michael love him, call him “Uncle Jonny.” It’s a No Lose situation: The Williams get to work at their jobs, and Jonny gets to save for a car and for his college education. Win-win all over!

Things worked out well for months. Then the kids started having behavioral problems, the parents report noticing. Penny was waking up at least one night a week, screaming from bad dreams. Michael started wetting the bed again, a problem Bonnie and Dean had thought he’d licked two years previously. What to do? They determined to spend more time with the kids over the weekends. But the problems didn’t get any better, they just got worse. Soon, the kids were acting out at preschool, elevating to the point where, at least once a week, the school was calling Bonnie or Dean to come pick them up early.

And then, the kids starting asking if Bonnie could come home early to play with them, and when Bonnie asked, “Doesn’t Uncle Jonny play with you,” Penny burst out crying and Michael said, “We just want Mommy!” After talking with Dean and Dean’s brother, Karl, a police officer, she thought there might be a problem with “Uncle Jonny.” So, they turned to a “nanny cam,” a video camera hidden in a common household item such as a toy, a smoke detector, or a book, that would record the activities while “Uncle Jonny” was taking care of the little ones.

What Bonnie and Dean saw on the recording sickened, saddened, and frightened them. “Uncle Jonny” was molesting their kids! They brought the tape to Karl and his sergeant, Wally Adams, who immediately brought it to the District Attorney. A warrant was issued by a judge, and “Uncle Jonny” was arrested.

Jonathan L. Brand, 15, was charged with felony child molestation. He is under house arrest and a trial date has been set for early March

Marble Flooring, the Cool Alternative?

There are many myths about certain types of flooring materials. Some are believed to be easily damaged, others to be difficult to maintain or keep clean, still others to be limited it their variety or style. Marble floors, however, seem to have escaped most of these often unfounded concerns. Here we will discuss not only the reasons why a marble floor is a great choice for a new home, but also its cooling properties in warm climates, timeless visual appeal, its durability and ease of cleaning and maintenance. Let’s look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of this fascinating medium.

Marble floors conjure up visions of cool, white, Spanish style houses with small paved courtyards and sunny terraces. Hot, sunny days and long cool drinks enjoyed around a low, wrought iron table in the middle of a large, airy room with a white marble floor. In the heat of summer, just imagine walking barefoot on that cool, smooth marble floor. There is the first of the great advantages of marble flooring. It stays cool in the heat of summer and feels smooth to the touch.

As marble floors can be found in many homes in warmer climates, there is a huge market for them. The quality and finish of the marble is very high and due to the myriad of different natural patterns of veins running through the stone, there is a huge variety to choose from. For this, among other reasons, marble never seems to go out of style.

Marble as a flooring medium is surprisingly durable. When it is first laid, it is treated with a propriety stain resistant sealant, which protects the floor for around ten years, after which it is recommended that it be resealed. It will survive most spills as long as they are cleaned up right away, although strong acidic liquids may cause stains, which can be professionally removed. Other than keeping them clean, marble floors are virtually maintenance free.

Cleaning marble floors is as easy as mopping with hot water and leaving to dry. A propriety cleaning fluid can be added to the water, although this must be mild, bleach-free, non-caustic and pH neutral. There are several brands available, but if in doubt only go for the ones that are clearly marked “suitable for marble floors”.

The disadvantages of marble floors are few. Once professionally laid, they will remain in place for their extremely long lifetime, unlike ceramic tiles, which can lift with moisture invading through cracked grouting. They can be stained or marked by spillage of caustic liquids if not cleaned up right away, but this is a common disadvantage with most flooring materials. While marble is wonderfully cool to the touch in the heat of summer, it is a different story in winter. A marble floor can then make a house feel cold. This can be simply remedied by using Hessian backed rugs to cover the floor during the cold months.

With all the above in mind, it seems clear that marble flooring is a good choice for a new home, especially those located in warmer climates. They look good, come in a variety of styles and are long lasting and durable. They are easy to clean and maintain and have few disadvantages. All in all, marble really is a cool choice for any home.

A bookcase filled with books

Image via Wikipedia

One way to let children know that they are special is to give them unique children’s furniture for their room, play area or outside. Children love to have something that is different and something that is important to them. The internet is a great place to find unique kids’ furniture. Often this will give you ideas for what you might like to find for your child’s room, or your child may even see something they really like. Regardless of where you look, there are always possibilities if you just keep your eyes open for creativity.

Traditional

While this may seem a bit contradictory, traditional styles can be very unique. Often antique or antique replicas use patterns, styles and colors that are not commonly seen anymore. Girls often admire Victorian style furniture, and boys are frequently drawn to the western or rustic style of furniture. Try taking your child to a furniture store and asking their opinion on the various styles to get a feel for what they find pleasing. There is also the possibility of having furniture custom made to include the child’s name or interests into the design of the piece.

It is also possible to take a piece of furniture that is not intended to be children’s’ furniture and convert it to just that. For instance, a traditional bookcase could be easily converted into a display case for models, or perhaps an open cupboard for displaying dolls or other prized possessions.

Shape

Children delight in shapes that are different from what they normally see, or what they expect. Things like round bookcases are often a favorite unique kids furniture item in any room. There are also art deco type pieces that really catch the eye and spark the imagination. Some companies manufacture furniture with themes, and this works well if you can find a piece that matches your child’s existing room, or perhaps consider redoing the room around the unique piece.

Color

Children all enjoy color, and they love to mix and match color. Try covering a piece of your child’s favorite furniture in a color they love to make it unique. It is also possible to find furniture that is already painted in patterns and motifs that children love, or, if you are artistic, you can do this yourself. For example, an ottoman that is painted like a frog would be a great addition to a garden theme bedroom. Perhaps a canopy over the bed draped with pink mesh could complete the princess and castle them in a young girls room. Boys that love a particular sports team could have furniture in the room with that teams logo or colors.

Unique children’s furniture doesn’t have to be expensive, it has to be different than what they see everywhere else. Try shopping online to get some really interesting, creative and unique children’s furniture at within budget prices. If you are creative or artistic yourself, personalize the items by painting, adding motifs or stencils to the furniture to match your child’s interests and taste. Don’t forget to encourage your child to help out, as they can really help you make the item one of a kind.

Should You Choose Color Schemes To Complement The Accessories or Vice Versa?

Colouring pencils

Image via Wikipedia

Choosing the right color scheme for any room is harder than you might think. It really takes a keen eye and sometimes it’s best to accept that we are not all artists or talented in this way. So why not let an expert guide help you make the right decision.

Using the right colours that either match or blend well with each other will give you balance and balance is always a good place to start. So to get started you’ll first need to choose a base colour. A base colour is just a colour in which you want everything else to revolve around and a good way to choose this is to consider the room in which you want to formulate a colour scheme for and think about your favorite colours. But keep in mind that sometimes your favorite colors may not mesh well with the type of room in question and also keep in mind that there are multitudes of ways to use color within a room so long as they complement and coordinate with each other.

Paint is tricky business and this is where a real artistic eye and hand will come in more than handy. There are a number of painting techniques that not only combine color schemes but textures as well. Many major do-it-yourself kits come with written directions as well as demonstrations that show you how to do the techniques yourself. A great practical way to learn a thing or two about technique is watching network television home improvement shows as these really have some great do it yourself practical segments that many a person has learned from!

After you have decided on the paint color and technique that you are going to use, the next thing to think about is the area involving the color scheme and the furniture that will be used in this area. It always works best to choose neutral or solid colors for your largest pieces of furniture since many of these, especially the pricey, elegant and antique pieces tend to come in metal or wooden designs. This also helps insure that they will have a long life span within your home since these materials and colours are very heavy duty and wear and tear tends not to surface on them.

For smaller pieces of furniture, like the occasional chair or less expensive pieces of furniture, nice trendy colors or patterns add a lovely luster to the area. This helps keep your area up to date and stylish without causing you to break the bank remodeling or redecorating every other year. When the style goes out you do not have to replace the larger price items.

It is recommended that more neutral color pieces of larger furniture be tied into the color schemes through the use of pillows and throws. Pillows can be purchased ready made or can be made by you, of course the benefit of making them yourself is that you can get exactly what you want and blend your colors much better than shopping to find colours close to what you are looking for. Embellishments are a great way to accent throw pillows and these embellishments can be as simple as adding accent tassels or as complicated as sewing beads onto the pillows that follow the design of the fabric. This technique is tricky and time consuming but the end product is very special.

Other accents in a room that work great to enhance colour schemes are coloured glass. Glass vases and decorative bottles are beautiful especially when placed by a source of light. These also come in a wide range of prices so the use of them fits most budgets. Colored glass bottles and vases can often be picked up at second hand stores. Just remember that less is more especially where beautiful ornate accents are concerned.

It’s wise to choose colors of similar densities for a balanced look so one doesn’t overpower another and also choose colours that stem from the same primary colour so that a layered, in depth look is achieved. You’d be surprised at the harmony you’ll be able to create.

How To Clean Your Air Conditioner Like A Pro

The external section of a typical single-room ...

Image via Wikipedia

Jack Frost is nipping at our nose and Santa Clause has just left. The eastern seaboard has just received their third blizzard for a total of over 125 cm (56 inches) of snow in one week. So, who in their right mind would be thinking about window air conditioners at this time of year?

Call me crazy, but I am.

It is a good time of year to start this project. Firstly, it keeps ones mind sharp for the coming spring. Plus, it allows you to try out those new tools you got for Christmas. Mainly though, it is a good winter project because by the time spring arrives you will be too busy to think about this job.

Very little is required to clean a window air conditioner, except lots of patience. If patience is something you lack then it is a job you should turn over to the local appliance serviceman.

Great Bedroom Decorating Ideas And Tips

Regal Suite Bedroom at Umaid Bhawan Palace in ...
Image via Wikipedia

Most of us can not afford to have a professional decorator design new rooms every time we tire of the decor. Usually, it’s not the furniture that we tire of, but what is on and around our carefully chosen furniture. It’s usually accent pieces, drapes, or simply the color of the walls that lose their freshness, causing us to get bored with the whole room and have an itch to redecorate. Here is an idea which is simple, inexpensive and makes that room’s appeal last much longer. This applies to any room, but has particular usefulness as a bedroom decorating idea.

Our bedrooms are the private rooms in our homes, and we spend quiet times, just waking up and sipping coffee, reading or talking to our spouse. We come to associate relaxing feelings with the bedroom. When we want to relax and enjoy kicking back, we do not want to look around and say, “Oh, I can not stand this bedspread any more!” We want our bedroom to be inviting, not boring. You might think that bedroom decorating ideas come with a premium price tag, requiring a complete makeover to freshen the look. The truth is, bedroom decorating ideas can be as simple as a change of throw pillows and some new lamp shades. A new set of curtains can change the whole mood of the bedroom.

These bedroom decorating ideas require that you start with squinting your eyes and looking around the room. Really! Squint your eyes slightly and cast your gaze around the room. Take different vantage points. Lie on the bed. Stand in the doorway. What is the first thing that catches your critical eye? Is it that old picture you are fond of, but tired of looking at? Your bedspread is pretty, but you have had it for years. In other words, find what weighs your eye down. There may be several things, but chances are, it is not the furniture.

You love that picture, but it’s been hanging there so long it’s become part of the wall. Relocate the picture to another room where it once again becomes a surprise to your eyes. If your bedspread is the offender, it’s time to pack it away for guest bedding and buy a new one. Now imagine. What color or fabric would please you in it’s place? Aha! you say. I want a deep blue velvet bedspread, and now that I think of it, some ivory lace curtains would be luxurious.

You are getting the gist of these types of bedroom decorating ideas now. Restrain yourself, as it’s easy to get carried away. These bedroom decorating ideas succeed when you aim for simplicity. Maybe a simple coat of paint or stained wooden louvers replacing curtains are all you need. Your beige lampshades might be changed for hand painted art deco ones for an entirely different look in the room in which you love to relax.

Quickly And Easily Generate Home Decorating Ideas

Aimee Wilder wallpaper - squirrels
Image by ooh_food via Flickr

If you are thinking of decorating your home, then you can follow this simple formula to quickly come up with ideas that can make a difference in your home decorating or even redecorating.

What you will have to do is start with one component of your home at a time. What exactly are home components? Very easy, break your entire decorating task into:

1) Walls

2) Flooring

3) Ceiling

4) Windows

5)Doors

Now create a list of these 5 things priority wise. This can be as per your schedule of decorating. You can also assign a whole week to just decorating wall ideas and when you have done move on to another item in the list.

Such type of breaking down will help you to concentrate on almost all aspect of home decorating easily. Since you will be assigning a timeframe, the final output will also have quite details in it.

For example if in the first week you want to tackle the walls section, you can come up with may be 10 alternatives to wall decorating like

* wallpapers
* Repainting
* Tile Cladding
* textured Plaster
* Repainting only selected walls
* Wall hangings
* Wall paintings

and much more…

With these at your hand you can then mark down the budget required and kind of “theme” you want to go for.

Every home component above will have their own “treatments”. Such as doors and windows if made of wooden will have polishing and painting or replacing hinges or even completely replacing pivot type to sliding type windows. When you think about this before starting your work, you will have a very clear idea of the budget and that will speed up the home decorating process.

Breaking down the home decorating components will help your brain to think about one piece at a time and will have clear and unique ideas quickly. I urge you to give this method a try and see the difference for yourself.

How is Laminate Flooring Made and How Do I Protect My New Laminate Floor?

How is Laminate flooring made and how do I protect my new Laminate floor?

Laminate flooring has grown by leaps and bounds in a very short period of time. The reason behind the rapid laminate wood flooring growth is the ease of installing laminate flooring. This wood flooring system is a floating floor that has a laminate flooring underlayment on which the laminate floor lays over top of. Another benefit to having a laminate floor system is the durability of the floor. Laminate flooring manufacturers are using new technologies to create a very dense fiber wood core with a very durable top plastic coating.

Constructions of laminate floors

There are basically two types of laminate floor constructions. You have the direct pressure laminate and the high pressure laminate. The two different styles vary in the way they are attached to the core. The direct pressure process is a one step process where they fuse all the layers directly to the core all at the same time by using melamine resins and pressure and heat they are impregnated and together to form a very durable laminate plank flooring. The other high pressure laminate flooring is a two layer process. The first is that the craft paper style sheets will be glued together and using a print film, which is then glued to the core. Here everything is glued together and using high pressure they become very hard and durable.

What is available for Laminate flooring?

The laminate wood flooring is almost invincible to spills, stains, burns and a very high tolerance to scratches. Laminate flooring prices have such a wide range but can offer you just about any replicas of any wood species that you would desire. They will come in a few different varieties such as the single strip, two strips or even the three strips with micro beveled edges, square edges or just beveled edges. Depending on the quality you are looking for the top finishes and treatments will vary the price of the laminate wood flooring. Because these floors can imitate just about any flooring on the market, your choices for texture and looks give you an abundance of choices such as traditional stone, ceramic tiles and beautiful hardwood.

Caring for your Laminate floor

Laminate flooring is stain and fade along with scratch resistant and with a few preventive maintenance ways you can have your floor last a very long time. First you must follow the laminate flooring manufacturer’s limitations and by keeping their recommendations in consideration you will have a floor that will last forever.

Your Maintenance and laminate wood flooring care

· Place designer mats in front of stoves and sinks along with all the room entrances
· Always have felt protectors under the feet of furniture

· Use chair coasters that are clean and working properly will help
· One of the biggest things you can do is to try and follow the laminate floor manufacturers recommendations for room temperature and what they recommend for humidity levels

Maintaining laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is very durable and not that hard to keep clean. All you have to do is regularly sweep or vacuum with a soft brush. Damp mop the laminate wood floor using a bit of ammonia or vinegar and water being careful not to flood the work panels as you can damage them this way. Some products that are not recommended for your laminate floor are soaps, scouring powder, floor polish or steel wool as these may damage the laminate wood flooring. Always test a product that you are unsure of in a low visible area. If you have to remove a stain use the recommended laminate floor cleaner and mop up to keep any water from entering the joints. Also make sure you use a damp mop and not a wet one.
