Decorating Ideas For Small Rooms

Decorating Ideas for Small Rooms

* Make the most of small rooms. Color plays a vital role in a small room. It sets the decorative style and scheme, but also can change the room’s appearance. Use bright colors on the walls. Darker colors may be more popular but using bright colors makes a room seem more spacious. For example: Cool colors such as blues, greens, (some) purples make a small room appear larger and airier. The reverse is true of warm colors such as reds and yellows as they will make a small room seem more intimate and intense.

* A home decorating tip for integrating color into mostly white rooms–blend, blend, blend! There are many shades of white and cream that work nicely with “graduations” of accent colors. Visualize three shades of rosy pink pillows against a white sofa!

* Decorating ideas include painting the ceiling a lighter color than the walls. Use smaller patterns in wallpaper and furniture upholstery. Large patterns may be used in accessories such as pillows and throws.

* Select fewer, larger pieces of furniture to make a room appear more open and less cluttered opposed to putting lots of small pieces of furniture in the room. Taller furniture should be placed along a far wall while shorter furniture may be placed away from the wall giving a sense of spaciousness.

* The use of screens will help divide multi-purpose rooms in a small house. A bedroom or living room may have one corner as an office. A screen will provide privacy as well as hiding the “trappings” of the work area.

* Daybeds with a pullout trundle are the answer for small bedrooms. They will accommodate two people but take up less space in the room on a daily basis. The room can also be used as an office, craft room or quiet sitting room.

* Use textures for interest in a small room. Combining textures in your decor will give a small room interest, appeal, dimension and depth. Choose accessories and fabrics with texture for the best impact; for example: wrought iron, glass, stone, metal, chrome, copper, bronze, mirrors, detailed finishes, textured fabrics, shiny fabrics, and unique area rugs to mention a few.

* Mirrors are a great way to create an illusion of space. If you have a wall in front of the entrance as you enter your home, hang a unique mirror on that wall to open it up and add interest to the area.

*Quick change artist! Move furniture and furnishings around! Don’t be afraid to rearrange items in your home. Just changing the accessories or pictures from room to room can bring about a huge change.

Closet Doors Dare To Be Different

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

You’ve just spent a considerable amount of money on the interior of your closet, installing a closet organizer to assure that your shoes, ties, belts, scarves, dresses, shirts and slacks are all easily accessible. As nice as the interior of your closet now looks, you don’t want the effect to be spoiled by a door that doesn’t do it, or the rest of your bedroom, justice.

How big is your closet?

Of course the type of closet door you have depends in large part on the size of your closet. If it’s a wall closet - very shallow - then of course you’ll need a different type of door then if it’s a walk-in.

The four types of closet door, therefore, would be the simple panel door that opens outward and lets you into the walk-in closet, bifold doors that let you view your wall closet, and the sliding doors which could be used for either version, depending on the length of the closet itself. The accordion door is also a choice.

Bifold doors would allow you to use over-the-door system to store shoes, for example - which would not work with a sliding door. Sliding doors can look more attractive than bifold doors, however.

Matching or contrasting colors?

Of course the first thing you’ll have to decide about the door is its color. You’ll need to find a color that will match your bedroom walls, or set it off in a striking manner. If you’d like to give your bedroom the illusion of greater size, than you’ll want to get mirrored doors. And for that really elegant touch, you can even get sliding frosted glass doors.

And you’ll have to give some thought to the future, of course. If you like to change the color of your bedroom every now and then, you won’t want to have to change the closet door as well because it would clash with your new decor.

Vinyl or wood or what?

And what should your closet doors be made of? You’ve got a lot of varieties to choose from: stamped steel, hollow core, super-thin wood, or solid wood. Solid wood doors give you the most variety in their design, for you can have them hinged, folding, sliding or with pocket applications. These doors can have flat panels - to which you can affix mirrors or fabric, or louvers. (Kestrel Wood Closet Doors is one company that offers solid wood doors of high quality. They also do custom doors.) For mirrored closet doors, Fort Glass (fabricators of Stanley Mirror Doors) are one provider out of several that you can investigate on the web.

There are so many choices that you won’t want to rush into your decision. Take your time investigating sources on the web, visit such stores as Home Depot or Menards or the specialty stores in your area. You can also take advantage of open houses in housing developments to go in and visit these houses and see the way those closets and bedrooms are designed. You’ll then be able to make an informed decision.

Never Rely on Your Plumbing Expectations

We in the 21st Century living in a developed Country are totally, totally spoiled. Just ask anyone who lives in a developing Country.

Better still; try living in one yourself for some time rather than just passing through as a tourist living in 5 star luxuries.

It was 20 years ago that I lived in Malaysia for 3 years. I loved living in Georgetown on Penang Island. The people were beautiful, the scenery breathtaking and the food from the Mukan stall’s delicious and cheap.

Some of the backstreets though where the poorer people lived and survived were not always so delectable or pleasant. The open “Mony drains” were either so deep you would think they were dug out by a miner, or so shallow they were virtually useless. Mony drains were short for monsoon drains due to the tropical downpours that came through every 3 months as the monsoon passed over on its way south then on its way north again.

Now this is where I really appreciated plumbing. We, of course, being among the blessed elite, had ‘normal’ plumbing in our house with running water.

The difference was that this water was released into our outside “mony drain” that ran around our house and into a larger drain which ran into a larger drain etc until it ran out to where ever was the great meeting place for all mony drains.

Every week our wonderful, cheerful gardener came with his tin of ‘goodies’, hard scrubbing brush and scrubbed our drains for us.

There was one outside tap for use in the garden and it was located at the front of our house. On this tap we had a long hose that reached around the back of our house. Yes, you’re right, Nothing unusual about that.

We lived in a cul-de-sac with 3 houses. The last house had a really beautiful garden with a very attractive spirit house out the back. If I had been an ancestor, I would have been honoured to have lived there but I was a neighbour instead.

But as neighbours, we had a problem that went beyond different languages.

Their gardener raked the leaves off their perfect lawn and burned them in front of our house. Often long after our Amah Devi had put the washing on the line to dry.

Because it ‘got smoked,’ she used to bring it in and re-do it, which really wasn’t remotely fair.

We asked nicely, we asked again, and again and again. We spoke with the owner of the house, his wife, the mother-in-law grandmother, the gardener many, many times. We even had a solicitor write a letter to them in Bahasa requesting that they stop causing us this problem.

But they continued to light the fire to burn the leaves directly out the front of our house.

This particular day I came back from walking the kids to the school bus and they were out the front about to light the fire again. I approached them and asked them not to and pointed to the washing hanging on our line. It was the grandmother and the gardener and she was telling the gardener to ignore me and light the fire. He continued to hesitate because he was a kind hearted man and knew he was causing extra work for Devi.

I pointed to the tap in front of our house and went and got the hose. I turned the tap on full-bore, kinked the hose to hold the water back and hauled it through the front gate to where the fire was now burning.

I unkinked the hose expecting to see the usual gush of water sprout forth and it went drip…drip…drip…

I couldn’t help myself. I burst out laughing and laughing and the grandmother joined in. The gardener didn’t quite know what to do but his grin said it all.

The grandmother came over and gave me a kindly pat on the arm, told the gardener to put the fire out and whatever else she said but we never had a fire lit there again.

Now that was probably the only time in my life I have been grateful for bad plumbing.

Tips For Landscaping Your Yard

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »
Posted on

If you have a house, then you probably have a front and back yard. They may be postage-stamp sized, but you have them. If your yards our small, it may be even more difficult to landscape than a larger yard, because every single thing in the yard will be magnified and a wrong item will stand out all the more. But there’s no reason why even a postage-stamp yard can’t be beautiful - after all, take a look at your postage stamps and see the miniature masterpieces on them!

And if you don’t have a house, but rather live in an apartment, don’t think that there’s no landscaping you can do. If you’re fortunate enough to have a balcony, you can create a tiny garden out there!

Ideas can be just around the corner
Before you do anything….think about it. There’s plenty of magazines out there on gardening and home care to give you inspiration…there’s plenty of books in the library. And of course the internet is a never ending buffet of great ideas. And then you can always see what your neighbors have done with their yards.

Make a plan, follow the plan
At the same time as you’re searching for ideas on how you’d like to landscape your front and backyards, have a couple of maps of those yards, drawn to scale. Input all the items such as trees, ponds and buildings that are already there. Decide if you’re going to keep all the trees or if you’re going to cut any down. It’s best to have one master plan, and then use lots of tracing paper to mess around with various ideas until you find one you like.

Sun, wind and rain
The success of your landscape will depend in a large part on nature. Mark down those places in your yard that get the most sun and at what times. Find out from your local weather service which way the prevailing winds blow - you might need a windbreak. And does your area get a lot of rain or only a little rain? That will determine the kinds of plants, flowers and trees you’ll want in your yard, and where you’ll place them so they’ll get the most sun - or the least amount of sun.

Prepare the ground
Conduct some soil tests to find out what kind of soil you have - and add the appropriate fertilizer or other materials to turn it into soil fit for growing. Sandy soil is not as good as soil that is well-intermixed with clay, for example. Also, what’s the pH balance of your soil? It’s easy for you to purchase a kit and do the testing yourself. You want your soil to have a pH balance of between 6 and 7. Anything higher than that is alkaline, anything below that is acidic. You’re striving for a neutral balance between the two.

Do you have any dips or slopes in your yard? Consider filling them in – it will save time in mowing!

Consider the way your lawn drains rainwater. In fact, go out after a rain and walk all the way around, seeking any soft spots. If your soil is predominantly clay, water is retained easily - if its sandy, the water leaches away.

Accessories
Finish off your lawn, flower and vegetable beds with just the right touch. Colored pebbles finish shrubbery beds off nicely and hide the weed fabric underneath which will prevent pesky weeds from popping up and ruining your carefully cultivated look. Statues and fountains can look nice - just don’t choose something too big for your yard.

Care and maintenance
Once you’ve designed and implemented your landscape, you can’t just let it go. Overgrown yards never look attractive. So make sure you mow your lawn on a regular basis. Don’t cut the grass too short - for that will stress it out. Water your lawn thoroughly, but be careful not to over-water. Once a year you’ll probably want to aerate the ground to keep it healthy.

But with a little love and attention, you’ll be able to enjoy your landscaped yard for years to come, and so will your friends and neighbors.

Your Kitchen’s Design

One of the centerpieces of the home is the kitchen. It makes sense that one of the most thriving and popular sectors of home design is kitchen design. Nothing is more important in a home than a well-planned, well-equipped kitchen. Kitchen design has definitely evolved over the years, and as a result, homeowners now have a wide variety of options. Modern kitchen design focuses on achieving a balance of functionality and beauty.

The first task of kitchen design is to establish a smooth transition between portions of the kitchen. Kitchen design must address the fact that, unlike most other rooms in the house, the kitchen is primarily a workspace. Most kitchens have a natural workflow to them, with adequate space between the prep areas, cooking area the clean up area. Good kitchen design addresses this and allows the users of the kitchen to quickly move between those three areas. There should be adequate walking space in the kitchen to avoid crowding, which should be another consideration in kitchen design.

Modern kitchen design also focuses on state of the art appliances. Today there are more varieties of appliance choices, and recent innovations like convection ovens are making kitchen design more high tech. Appliances come in finishes like stainless steel to make modern kitchen designs look sleek and sophisticated. To give the kitchen an integrated look and feel, it is best to choose appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, and microwaves from the same manufacturer and in the same color.

Kitchen design also involves choosing the color and theme for the kitchen. Color choices can make a dramatic, understated, or calming statement, depending on which color is used. In kitchen design, it is appropriate to coordinate the colors of the tiles and floors with the cabinetry, furniture, and appliances. This makes the kitchen feel unified. There are many kitchen design books available that give wonderful ideas for kitchen design combinations.

Tropical Hurricane Beryl

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Well it is still early in the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane season and already Hurricane Beryl, which grew fast from a Tropical Depression into a Tropical Storm and now soon to be a Hurricane is now barreling for the Bay. Beryl is sure to cause crude oil barrel prices to go even higher as speculators watch it grow.

It seems just yesterday we were barreling thru the Greek Alphabet in the record breaking 2005 Hurricane Season, which even rang in the new year with a Hurricane, just to remind us that we are mere ants on a sand bar in Florida as far as Mother Nature is concerned. But today we must all be a little concerned about Beryl barreling towards the bay.

Both the NOAA and the National Hurricane Center in Miami are keeping a close eye on this storm as it grows and the super computers are tracking its projected path. One thing is for sure as the Hurricane Hunters collect data and the satellites bring us all the images, that if this storm comes ashore there will be damage.

If you live in a Hurricane Risk Zone, you would be well advised to be prepared, as even a large Tropical Storm coming ashore could take out power perhaps for weeks. If you’re a commanded to evacuate do yourself a favor. Get your family and your self out of dodge and consider this in 2006.

Painting a Room Can Be Soooo Much Fun

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Have you ever gone into a paint store with colors in mind to paint the walls of a room in your home or office? Let’s say you wanted to paint it soft green to match the pretty throw pillows that you have on your couch. You get to the paint store and YIKES! You look at the swatches and there are so many variations of the color green. Your head starts to spin and now you can’t quite remember if it was a green with a touch of blue or a green with a touch of yellow.

Tip: Take the throw pillow with you. The paint store won’t mind. They want the sale and this way there won’t be any mistakes on what you want.

Also remember that a wall is a large space and a color on a small throw pillow may not look so good on a large wall. Or you may find that after you get the paint on the wall that you just don’t like it as much as you thought you would.

Tip: I put the item of the color - let it be a pillow, towel, rug or vase up against the wall that I want to paint. I look at it for a couple of days imagining the wall in that color. You will be amazed that after a couple of days of looking at it you may change your mind and want to choose another color. Better to catch it this way then after you spend the money and time to paint your wall.

Tip: If you have a high ceiling and you want to make it look lower. Paint the ceiling a darker shade of the wall color. This will give it the illusion of being lower. If you have a low ceiling and you want to make it look higher. Paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall color or a white/off white. This will give the illusion of it being higher.

Interior decoration can be a lot of fun. After painting the room you can now accent it with many colors. Remember just because you paint the room green doesn’t mean that you have to accent it with only greens and browns. Throw in a coral, a blue, or other colors to liven up the room. Experiment with color. You will be amazed how throwing in a bold colored throw pillow can liven up a dreary room.

Reasons to Choose Rustic Lighting

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

In recent years, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on modernization. This trend has affected nearly every aspect of every day life. Consider, for instance, the global domination of the cell phone industry, which feed newer, smaller, sleeker phones to the public on what seems like a weekly basis. Or perhaps the fashion trends that are a constantly changing part of a popular culture that has embraced the fast lane with nearly religious fervor.

These forces of ‘progress’ at work in society are seen in interior design as well. In this rush to the future, though, people tend to lose touch with concepts that have stood the test of time. The use of rustic lighting in interior design, for instance, is often overlooked. Although it may be seen by popular culture as outdated, rustic lighting is a simple way to give a space a warm charm.

This simplicity is, in fact, at the very core of the concept of rustic lighting. There is a lack of lavish materials or intricate designs in the fixtures, and the methods of lighting are generally fairly basic. So why would someone choose this lighting style over one that might by more complex or striking? Simple: the style is extremely approachable. A room that is lit with this style of lighting instantly seems much more welcoming than one which has a more modern feel to it. The room will draw people in and make them feel like they are at home.

There are a few reasons that a rustic lighting design lends such a cozy, homey atmosphere to a space. The first is the lighting fixtures themselves. Rustic fixtures are generally made from simple materials, such as copper, iron, and a mineral such as mica, or glass, either colored or clear. There is usually no gold or silver or fancy embellishment. While this may reduce the wow factor of a space, it also makes the space very easily related to. An area decked out with more fancy lighting may be a remarkable sight to behold, but in the end, when the initial impressive feeling wears off, it can often make people feel out of place.

The second reason that rustic lighting makes a space more welcoming is the light itself. As mentioned above, many fixtures in this style use mica or colored glass. This gives the light in the room a tint, which will go a remarkably long way to change the atmosphere of an area. Mica, for instance, has a rusty orange-brown color, which, when light filters through it, will give a room an earthy, warm tone reminiscent of the tone of a sunset or a fireplace. People naturally feel a sense of warmth and safety from these tones of light.

This principal, however, also means that rustic lighting is not the right choice for every space. The design and coloration of the room has to be compatible with the fixtures and the light itself if it is tinted, or you will end up with a space that is the opposite of what you had set out to achieve, in that the clash of colors or styles will make your room feel awkward rather than welcoming.

Wood Furniture Care - Looking After Your Patio Furniture

Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

There is nothing nice than sitting out in the garden on a nice summers day, sipping a refreshing, cooling drink and letting your cares simply drift away. So what better way to do this than to do it on wooden patio furniture?

Wooden patio furniture can make any garden look cozy, warm and homely. It allows you to enjoy your garden and to feel a lot more relaxed, especially after a hard days work. In order to feel happy in life you need to have a space in which you can go to feel relaxed and free and wooden patio furniture can allow you to do just that.

Adding Wooden Furniture to Your Patio

When looking for wooden patio furniture you may be wondering what to go for. One popular choice which many people love is the Adirondack chair which has a smooth finish and it is extremely comfortable to relax into. It also adds a little color into the garden and that can make the garden seem a lot more welcoming.

Basically when choosing what wooden furniture to have, you need to know what it is you are trying to achieve. You ideally want to make your garden look spacious and at the same time you want it to be a little retreat. Perhaps adding a small wooden swing into the garden would be a good idea. Imagine just sitting back with a loved one on the swing slowly letting your worries go as you enjoy the summer night’s breeze.

If you are looking for wooden furniture which is truly elegant then teak furniture is what you should be looking for. It looks beautiful in any garden and it gives off a slight exotic feel to it. Generally you are looking to find the best quality wood that you can and teak is one of the most beautiful along with cedar that you can get. They have excellent weather resistant properties and that means that they do not take as much looking after as other wooden furniture does.

No matter which furniture you do decide to get for your patio, it would be a good idea to add a finish to it just in case. This helps to protect the furniture and it ensures that you have not wasted your money on something that you will have to replace in the near future. You can also wash the furniture a little with warm soapy water every now and again to keep it looking clean and tidy.

Overall wooden patio furniture can make an excellent addition to any garden and it can help you to enjoy your day/evening. Just make sure that you get good quality furniture and then you can even work out whether you want to add further decorations to the furniture such as umbrellas to block the sunlight out or rugs to make the whole space just that little bit more beautiful.
